Listen up, comedy nerds. Mark Sept. 14 on your calendars. That’s when the album from The State, titled Comedy For Gracious Living, that you never knew existed – or did you? — is set for release.
“It was a freeing experience because no one was watching over us, there were no ‘adults’ around,” original member Kevin Allison told USA Today. “We’d swim and drink and gamble all day and record the silly ideas we’d had that day up into the wee hours that night like kids making tapes in the basement. If you listen, you can hear the ice clinking in the rum drinks we had in hand at all times.”
The album, to be released by Rhino Records, was recorded in the Bahamas in January of 1996 and features the talents of Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain, as well as Kerri Kenney-Silver, Thomas Lennon and Ken Marino.
You can pre-order the album and listen to samples here. Do it!
Hey, remember last summer when Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter did a series of video e-cards for hilarious e-card provider someecards.com? Regardless, here they are. Ok, so now that we’ve convinced you that we weren’t making that up, the fact that Eugene Mirman has now signed on to do a series of e-cards will feel so right (and relevant) to you. Well, it’s true!
Below is the comedian’s first effort for the site. Really, it’s little different than any other viral video Mirman would make on his own. Maybe that’s why we like it. We’re down for any excuse to get more Mirman online. Enjoy!
This will come as a huge bummer for all you die hard fans of awkward-laugh-masters Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black. After much speculation, Showalter announced the Michael and Michael Have Issues‘ cancellation on his Twitter.
“To all who were fans of Michael & Michael Have Issues I can confirm that one week ago Comedy Central canceled the show. Thanks for watching!”
The Larry Sanders-esque series focused on heightened versions of the two Michaels bickering behind the scenes of their fictional sketch show. It’s a shame because the show started funny and had potential to become even funnier. But alas, like the duo’s previous Comedy Central series, Stella, MMHI failed to hook an audience beyond its legion of die hard fans. But then again, it only got one measly season.
It’s beginning to look a lot like… The holidays (Punchline Magazine is non-denominational)! To lighten things up for the shopping season, the fun loving folks at ebay has launched a cool new ad campaign featuring comedian spokesmen. Jim Gaffigan, Kevin Hart and the duo of Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black have lent their services to the Web’s hottest auction resource. The ads are funny! Here’s a taste:

WitStream, the new Twitter-like site that focuses on the tweets of comedians, enjoyed a festive launch on Monday night at Comix in New York City. Michael Ian Black, who co-founded the site, hosted the show. He was also on-hand throughout, critiquing the live feed of his peers’ WitSream one-liners from a laptop at the side of the stage. He also gave the best explanation of WitStream I’ve heard so far: “It’s like Twitter, but without most of the people.”
The show featured stand-up from some of WitStream’s top “aristocrats.” Baron Vaughn, Morgan Murphy, Black’s collaborator Michael Showalter, Josh Fadem, the Sklar Brothers and Doug Benson delivered killer sets. All in all, it was a great kickoff for the new site. You can keep your Twitter addiction, but definitely open a tab for WitStream, which will most definitely guarantee more chuckles per minute of wasted time.
Nothing hits the spot like a snappy one liner. Twitter, with its 140 character or less update system, has become the go-to spot for comedy fans to get frequently updated content from their favorite comedians. The only problem is, you have to sift through an awful lot of boring Tweets to get to the good stuff.
Comedian and sitcom star Michael Ian Black has tackled this problem with a new website. Witstream.com showcases the jokes, observations and nonsensical updates of the funniest comedians on Twitter.
“So often I hear people complain they’re frustrated by social networks because there’s nothing interesting about knowing what their co-workers ate for lunch,” says co-founder and CEO Lisa Cohen. “WitStream solves this problem because 100% of the content is from comedians, who write some truly hilarious and insightful stuff.”
To celebrate the launch of Witstream, its founders are holding a show in New York featuring some of the site’s contributors: Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Pete Holmes, Josh Fadem, Morgan Murphy, and Baron Vaughn. It’s happening Nov 2 at 8 pm at Comix. Click here for tickets.
How often do some of the world’s coolest comics get together for a wild comedy romp in one of the world’s coolest places? The answer, since last year’s Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, is at least once a year!
Eugene Mirman is launching his second annual eponymous comedy fest, in which the hilarious and very well connected comic gathers a bushel of his funniest friends for a few nights of alt-comedy mayhem. In the words of the man himself, “Last year myself and a few friends put on a slightly ridiculous comedy festival in Brooklyn. We had fun so we’re doing it again.”
The shows run from Thursday, Sept. 17 to Sunday, Sept. 20 at Bell House and Union Hall, two highly enjoyable Brooklyn bar/venues. This year’s guests include some of the biggest names in comedy, including Michael Showalter, Todd Barry, John Mulaney, Kristen Schaal and Marc Maron. Check out the fest’s websitefor more info on the shows’ lineups and ticketing. Also, look for Mirman’s upcoming album, God Is A 12 Year Old Boy With Aspergers, which comes out Oct. 6 on Subpop.
Tonight at 10:30 pm EST marks the finale of the very first season of Michael and Michael Have Issues. In honor of that fact, the folks at Comedy Central jammed together some of the more memorable moments from the past few weeks of the series. Watch. Enjoy. Repeat.
You’ll also want to check out the video interview we did with Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter the week before the show premiered on Comedy Central.
It’s no secret that Twitter really has been taken over by the country’s best comedians. So this new Twitter development doesn’t come as much of a surprise. I recently got my hands on an advanced copy of Twitter Wit: Brilliance in 140 Characters or Less, a book that features some of the funniest Tweets made public since the micro-blogging site launched in 2006. Edited by San Francisco-based tech writer and founding editor of Valleywag (a blog about Silicon Valley), Nick Douglas, the book is what you’d expect: a list of great Tweets.
But something tells me the publisher told Douglas, “Dude, we have to throw some other shit in there; this can’t just be a list of Tweets.” Hence, within the book there’s an occasional page that list, among other things, suggestions for funny Tweet fodder, lists of Twitter tools and applications and “rules of Twitter wit.” The book is out Sept. 8. For now, check out some comedian selections from said tome. Also, be sure to follow Punchline Magazine at @punchlinemag.
@margaretcho I still have a hard time thinking of NWA as an airline. To me they’ll always be straight outta Compton.
@eugenemirman Heading on Amtrak from Seattle to Portland. I’m looking forward to revealing to everyone soon that they are on a sing-along train.
@mshowalter Waitress just said their creamed spinach was “banging.” Now sure how I feel about that.
@JudahWorldChamp Invented 2 new forms of karate today. One of them can only work between 1 a.m. & 2 a.m. It has to do with the Earth’s rotation.
Like most dedicated comedy fans, I’ve been waiting patiently for the premiere of Michael & Michael Have Issues, Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter’s – aka two-thirds of Stella – new Comedy Central sketch show premiering July 15. It hasn’t been entirely easy. But to ease the anxiety I’ve been following @mshowalter, @michaelianblack and @stephiegrob on Twitter. Black’s one of the funniest Twitterers out there; I enjoy Showalter’s earnestness and many photos of normal New York City life and Grob always does a solid by giving us insider info on the goings on at the set of the show.
But last night, I got to check out the pilot episode, titled Greg the Intern. In doing so, I think I got decent hold of what the show will offer. While the episode is comprised of independently-themed sketches – one about a teenage couple who took a pledge to remain virgins and one wherein Black and Showalter throw down over the way the former Michael is imitating a butterfly fart (see video below) – the show’s through line is centered around the Michaels’ fight to win the affection of the show’s intern Greg. I won’t spoil the ending but I will say there’s a hilarious battle scene that finds both Michaels on a front lawn, shirtless and engaged in a physical confrontation of very odd proportions.
In short, the show is fucking hilarious. Stella fans will enjoy the warped interactions between the Michaels and newbies to Black and Showalter’s humor will find a refreshing take on sketch comedy they won’t soon find on Saturday Night Live.
