As we’ve said before, newcomer cable channel Epix, is fast becoming the go-to place to see exclusive premieres of stand-up comedy specials from some of the country’s best-respected comedians. You can already count David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, and Eddie Izzard as members of their roster.
And this week, it was announced that Louis C.K. has chosen the network to premiere his highly anticipated, critically acclaimed new hour special Hilarious.
And today, we learn that Epix will air Lewis Black’s new special, Basic Black, set to premiere Aug. 1. But, check it out: Basic Black is more than a traditional hour-long stand-up comedy special. New live footage of Black will be accompanied by vintage stage footage of the comedian in his younger days, interspersed, as well, with sit down interviews with Black.
Epix kicked off their string of comedy specials last year with Black’s Stark Raving Black.
Carnival cruise ships just got a little bit funnier (on purpose).
The company just announced Punchliner Comedy Clubs, a series of on-ship comedy venues to be incorporated into a number of their vessels this year. Comedians will perform 35 minute shows located on the boat’s aft lounges; Carnival claims they’ll boast big name headliners multiple nights a week of each voyage.
“Laughter is the most public, most infectious expression of fun, so we’re excited to provide our guests with an expanded offering in comedy with our new Punchliner Comedy Clubs,” said Gerry Cahill, Carnival’s president. “Given that laughter has been shown to have a positive effect on mood, stress reduction and overall happiness, our new clubs and performance line-up will only further enhance the spirited fun of a Carnival vacation.”
Carnival decided to add more comedy to their roster after the success of a comedy club aboard is Carnival Dream ship last year. And you may remember that earlier this year, it was announced that Lewis Black would host a week-long comedy cruise for Royal Caribbean.
Punchliner will be featured this year on 22 aptly titled “fun ships.” For more info, visit Carnival’s website.
Janeane Garofalo is one of a handful of comedians largely responsible for making stand-up amazingly popular in the 1990s and helped foster the idea of performing comedy outside of traditional comedy spaces. Since that time, she’s starred in movies, huge television shows – 24 – and continued to grace comedy stages worldwide.
The one thing she hasn’t done? Filmed a new stand-up special— until this May, when she did just that in Seattle. And now, Epix the still fledgling cable channel who have already brought us new comedy from Lewis Black and David Cross, will premiere her new hour – If You Will – on June 26.
Kathleen Madigan, of Last Comic Standing, Comedy Central and late night television fame, is filming a brand new hour-long comedy special this Saturday at the Gramercy Theater in New York City. And you, my friends, can be part of the taping. All you need to do is go here and lay some money down. There’s two shows that night.
Her longtime friend Lewis Black will be opening the show. Kathleen today told me that he lost a golf bet and his opening for her was her prize. Below I’ve dropped a video of Kathleen from a few hours ago at Comix in New York City, where we filmed an interview for our web series A Tight Five. So, look out for that. For now, check out the post interview breakdown below. Enjoy!
People complain about New York City being too expensive. But you can’t forget about all the awesome free events.
Comedy Central Park Live is one of them, as the free stand-up comedy show returns for a fourth summer this July as part of the 2010 Central Park SummerStage series.
This summer’s edition is a doozy, as “The Daily Show & Friends” make up the comics that will grace the stage. Lewis Black will take on hosting duties, as he welcomes Daily Show correspondents Wyatt Cenac and John Oliver, series alum Rob Riggle, executive producer Rory Albanese, and supervising producer Adam Lowitt.
It normally costs a lot of money to see these guys, so take advantage and check them out for free on July 21st at 8:00 p.m. And if that’s not enough incentive, the first 3,000 people will receive a complimentary, reusable shopping bag! I know!!!
Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival is pulling out the big guns once again. They’ve announced that the incomparably enraged Lewis Black will host Night of a Million Opinions, A Videotron Just For Laughs gala. The evening will feature no-holds-barred, opinionated comedy from some of today’s headiest comic minds.
This will be Black’s second time hosting one of the festival’s galas. Black’s evening will go down on Friday, July at 10 pm at the Theatre St. Denis. For info on tickets, lineups and other festival events, visit hahaha.com.
But really, would we have expected anything less? In an interview with the Wall Street Journal’s David Weidner, Black beared his trademark fangs against the Tea Partiers, and especially comic goldmine Sarah Palin. Check it out:
Fresh off the success of the inaugural Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival, produced by Michael Moore and Jeff Garlin, Michigan is gearing up for its second comedy fest in as many months: the Laugh Detroit Festival kicks off on Sunday, with a gala show hosted by Lewis Black.
Long standing Detroit-area comedy venue Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle and the Royal Oak Music Theater will play host to more than 40 comedians with geographical ties to the area.
“I’ve known Mark Ridley for a long time and I’ve always enjoyed working with him,”Black, who will also host a show of up and comers on Monday, March 22, told Detroit’s Daily Tribune. “It’s a chance to see him and a chance to see some comics I really like and see some new ones.”
Other well-respected comedians scheduled to perform are Kathleen Madigan, long time Black friend and opener John Bowman and Dave Coulier. For more info check out the fest’s official site at laughdetroit.com.
Just For Laughs today announced that the keynote address at their annual conference, which runs during the July 15 – 17 part of its Just For Laughs festival activities (July 7 – 18), will be given by Lewis Black. And everyone’s favorite underdog comedian Andy Kindler, like he does every year, will give the State of the Industry Address.
In addition, festival organizers announced that JFL will expand this year, creating a Comedy Bootcamp for Film. Its for anyone interested in the 2010 Telefilm Canada Features Lab. You can check out cfccreates.com and hahaha.com/conference for details. Three teams will get the opportunity to pitch their script to a panel of comedy experts and receive feedback before the Telefilm festival.
Lewis Black, Dave Attell, Kevin Hart, Jeffrey Ross, Darrell Hammond, Rich Vos, Gilbert Gottfried, Paul Mooney, Mike Vecchione, Julian McCullough, Capone and Ruperto Vanderpool all performed last night at Carolines in New York to raise money for Haiti.
The club, along with radio station Power 105.1 FM — DJ Ed Lover hosted the show — produced the night of laughs; all the proceeds from the event will be delivered to Doctors Without Borders and the Clinton Foundation. Check out some photos below, shot by Michael Grinspan, of last night’s festivities.
