It seems comedian Bob Saget, who has seen an incredible resurgence in popularity in the last five years – due to his stand-up touring, his narration duties on How I Met Your Mother and, of course, Comedy Central’s roast in honor of him – has another project in the works. If you’ve been paying attention to his Twitter feed, you’ll already know this. If not, however, the brass at A&E just made it official.

A&E announced that Saget, who’s sitcom Surviving Suburbia was canceled last year after one season, is set to host Strange Days with Bob Saget, wherein the Full House alum “immerses himself in strange cultures, practices and occupations,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Sounds to me like a mix between Discovery’s long-running Dirty Jobs and the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. That may not be a bad thing, since I enjoy both of those shows immensely. Saget will be joining fellow comedian Larry the Cable Guy in the reality show world this year; the Blue Collar comic is hosting a show on the History Channel called Only in America, which sounds like an American-only version of what Saget’s doing. Confused yet?

America’s favorite stand-up com-hicks, Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy (hilarious guys and bright businessmen laughing all the way to the ATM) will reunite to reminisce about 10 years of their comedy phenomenon, the Blue Collar Tour, on two TV specials airing back-to- back March 13 on CMT.

The fun begins at 8 p.m. with True Blue: Ten Years of Blue Collar Comedy, a behind-the-scenes chronicle of the tour, including its origin, personalities, setbacks and success.

Only the fourth member of the team, Ron White, will be missing when Foxworthy, Engvall, and Larry the Cable Guy join host Jaime Pressly (My Name is Earl) and a live audience on Blue Collar Comedy: Ten Years of Funny. The three comedians will recollect, introduce and joke about film clips from the tours, and re-create their signature improvisational finale.

Tentatively titled, The United States of Larry, the show will find the hugely successful blue collar comedian criss-crossing the nation interviewing folks with interesting jobs, hobbies and ways of life.

Larry revealed that participating in a Civil War reenactment and learning how moonshine is made are just two of the activities he’ll be partaking in.

Filming will begin in March and take a total of 39 days. “Did you ever think you’d see me on the History Channel?” Larry laughs.

Larry the Cable Guy, whose real name is Dan Whitney, has made quite the charitable donation to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. He has pledged $1.2 million dollars to construct a 14-bed children’s unit at the hospital that will be devoted to helping children overcome injury and illness.

Larry the Cable Guy, a native of Pawnee City, Neb., has made the pledge through his Git-R-Done Foundation which seeks to “provide assistance to individuals, families and organizations that have experienced hardships beyond their control.” In the past, the Git-R-Done Foundation has made contributions to both the National Guard and the FFA: the Future Farmers of America.

For information on how you can contribute to the Git-R-Done Foundation, why don’t you check out gitrdonefoundation.org? And hey, check out a few quotes below from Larry in this bizarrely edited video from a local news station in North Carolina.

In a new interview on WalesOnline, Eddie Izzard, in addition to asking us in the States to please believe that he’s a transvestite – despite his many manly roles in Hollywood the last few years – defends his decision to perform stand-up comedy in large arenas, as opposed to more intimate venues. Many comedy purists believe that stand-up comedy should always be presented in a room with no more than 300 to 350 seats, with excellent sight lines all around and where you can see the beads of sweat form on the comics brows.

Others, however, feel that there’s nothing wrong with “rock ‘n roll” comedy, wherein a comedian has a big enough audience to fill arenas, where, there’s a good chance a large percentage of the crowd will be watching most of the show on big screens flanking a giant stage, not unlike what you might see at a Dane Cook or Larry the Cable Guy show.

Izzard defends arena comedy thusly:

Six years ago, I did the first arena tour of the UK and that was a little scary because I didn’t know what I would be dealing with. People will say it’s not intimate, but … if people don’t want to watch it there, then don’t watch it there. But I definitely think it’s a good thing. It makes it more of an event. And why should rock and roll get all the arena shows? If you think of the first ever arena gig, when The Beatles did Shea Stadium in 1965, it was a crap gig. Great band, great event but a crap gig because you couldn’t hear anything.

People have had to learn how to play stadium gigs in music. And comedy has to go through the same thing, we just have to work out how to play arenas. No-one bats an eyelid when bands play arenas and if it’s a good thing for bands it’s a good thing for comedy.

So what do you think? Can stand-up comedy be performed effectively at an arena? Have you ever been to an arena comedy show? Did it suck? Was it awesome? Please share all of your experiences in the comments section.
