As we’ve reported, David Cross will be on your TV screen again very soon—Oct. 1 to be exact. The veteran comedian (and now author) has written, and will star in the six-episode series The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret for the IFC.
But what we just learned today is that Janeane Garofalo will be guest starring on the show. Russ Tamblyn – most well known as the gang leader of the Jets in the film West Side Story, and also the father of Cross’ girlfriend actress Amber Tamblyn – will also pop in for a guest spot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Janeane Garofalo will be sit down with EPIX’s Faith Salie this Wednesday at 2pm EST in the EPIX Event Theatre.
What’s that? And why should I care, you’re asking?
The Event Theatre is an spot produced by EpixHD.com that will allow viewers to interact directly with Janeane and other fans. So start thinking of some juicy questions for Janeane to answer! We’ll be embedding the live feed right here on Punchline Magazine.
For years, comedian and proud, progressive activist Janeane Garofalo has been criticized by Right wing pundits who take pride in calling her just another product of Hollywood’s misdirected liberal elite. But if Garofalo is one thing, it’s honest. Sure, she was an outspoken opponent of the Bush administration. And yes, before the last presidential election, she told Punchline Magazine she’d be fine with replacing Bush with either Obama or Hillary Clinton. She wasn’t picky; she just wanted Bush out.
But now that Obama’s taken the reigns, she’s not blindly nodding her head in agreement. In a new interview with Punchline Magazine’s Emma Kat Richardson, the veteran comedian, premiering her new comedy special, If You Will on June 26 on Epix, addresses the way the current president has handled the BP oil spill. Spoiler: she gives him a failing grade.
I also am disgusted that the Obama administration kept all the corrupt policies of the Bush administration in place, and helped feed into this tragedy. I don’t even understand it – I don’t understand how the Obama administration kept the same people in the management service in place, and kept ignoring the safety warnings.
They had Ken Salazar as the Secretary of the Interior, who’s corrupt. It just makes no sense. I have no idea why the Obama administration has been as heartbreakingly disappointing as it has. So yeah, I’m just disgusted. Other than that, I don’t know what else to say. I’m sure this type of thing will continue to go on and on and on.
Janeane Garofalo is one of a handful of comedians largely responsible for making stand-up amazingly popular in the 1990s and helped foster the idea of performing comedy outside of traditional comedy spaces. Since that time, she’s starred in movies, huge television shows – 24 – and continued to grace comedy stages worldwide.
The one thing she hasn’t done? Filmed a new stand-up special— until this May, when she did just that in Seattle. And now, Epix the still fledgling cable channel who have already brought us new comedy from Lewis Black and David Cross, will premiere her new hour – If You Will – on June 26.
It was a bit of a surprise when Casey Wilson was dumped from the cast of Saturday Night Live in September of last year, 19 months after landing the gig. But if a just-announced project for Wilson ends up hitting the airwaves, the comedy lords at NBC might regret their decision.
Wilson was cast as the lead in an ABC pilot called Endings, which, as Reuters reports, “revolves around a couple who, after breaking up at the altar must figure out how they and their four friends can maintain their relationship.”
Damon Wayans’ son, Damon Wayans JR, is also part of the cast.
While we enjoyed Wilson on SNL, the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about the sketch actress is the word-for-word scene remakes of Tango and Cash she produced with Janeane Garofalo. Check one out below.
All over the country, artists of all kinds are producing benefits to raise money for Haiti. And comedians are no different. Last week, one of our favorite clubs, Comix, where we film our interview series A Tight Five, hosted a pretty stellar night of comedy for Haiti, featuring performances by Dave Attell, Janeane Garofalo, Eugene Mirman, Wyatt Cenac, Todd Barry and more.
Also on hand was Mike Mitchell, the creator of the “I’m with Coco” poster. A signed-by-Conan version of the print was auctioned of for $1,650 on Jan. 28, the night of the show.
The venue raised $7,625 on admission to the showroom, an extra $80 for bar admission, $2,100 on auctions, $780 in live raffles and more than $1,332 in eBay auctions. In fact, there’s still more live auctions on eBay. Check them out here. And check out some photos (above and after the jump) taken by Mindy Tucker from the fundraiser.
As of late, we’ve been diggin what the Wilbur Theatre in Boston has been doing to help promote their comedy shows. In addition to the traditional marketing fare, they’ve been super active in generating original viral content and teaming up with local media outlets in unique ways to push their shows. In the theater’s latest effort, Boston.com’s relationship columnist Meredith Goldstein allowed Janeane Garofalo and Rob Riggle to pinch hit for her, offering video advice on love from backstage at the Wilbur Theater. Check out what the pair of comedians had to say below to a young woman who’s in love but unwilling to move for her man and to a man who’s not attracted to his girlfriend because of here severe weight gain.
Remember a few weeks ago when we reported on a series of stand-up tapings being hosted by John Oliver? You’re about to see the fruits of those tapings, and then some. Comedy Central has ordered six one-hour episodes of the series, which is appropriately titled John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show.
“When John Oliver said he wanted to host a stand-up series featuring his favorite comics, the only real question we had for him was ‘How soon can we do it?’” says Elizabeth Porter, Comedy Central’s senior vice president of specials and talent. “He’s a staple on ‘The Daily Show’ and is such an exceptional stand-up comic. It’s awesome to know our audience is going to get more of him this way.”
“It’s the most worthwhile way you could spend an hour each week that doesn’t involve getting Mount Rushmore gradually tattooed across your stomach,” says Oliver.
Guests on the series include Paul F. Tompkins, Janeane Garofalo, Marc Maron, Brian Posehn, Kristen Schaal and Eugene Mirman, as well as Maria Bamford, Greg Fitzsimmons, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Nick Kroll, Matt Braunger, Hannibal Buress, Pete Holmes, Amy Schumer, Chris Hardwick, Matt McCarthy and Hari Kondabolu.
The series premiers Jan. 8 at 11 PM on Comedy Central. Check it out!
It’s that time a week again when we proudly announce who’s going to appear on Marc Maron’s new-ish podcast WTF. I guess you can call us a sponsor of sorts– or at the very least an occasional financial supporter and tremendous fan of the show.
Regardless, this week on WTF brings in guest Doug Stanhope; it’s the first time Marc and Doug really sat down to have a heart to heart. You’re not going to want to miss that. Word has it, that Janeane Garofalo also makes a stop by the show. On Thursday’s episode, Marc welcomes Daily Show correspondent and stand-up comedian Wyatt Cenac. And for a special bonus on both shows? Marc’s dad, a surgeon, who has given some questionable medical advice on past shows, will drop by.
