Holy crap, it’s September already! That means that November is just around the corner which, more specifically, means that Team Coco is gearing up for the big man’s triumphant return to television. So far, details on the new venture, aside from its place on TBS at 11 pm EST, have been scarce – until now! Watch the video below, in which a still-bearded Conan reveals the title of his new show in a barren office!
This kind of doesn’t surprise us at all. Margaret Cho who has just released her first musical comedy album and who is continuously pushing herself deeper and deeper into the arts will be one of the celebrity contestants on this season’s Dancing with the Stars on ABC.
She’s one of the stars of Lifetime’s original series Drop Dead Diva and is in midst of a national tour in support of her aforementioned album Cho Dependent. When is this powerful woman going to find time to learn, rehearse and execute the demanding dances seen each year on this mega popular show?
In any event, let’s hope she fairs better than fellow comedian Jeffrey Ross who competed on the show during its seventh season in 2008. He and his pro dance partner Edyta Sliwinska were the first couple to be eliminated.
Last night on America’s Got Talent, Jimmy Fallon made a special appearance to help promote his Emmys hosting gig going down Sunday at 8 pm EST on NBC.
Now, for you haters out there thinking, “What’s Fallon doing on a talent show? He hasn’t got any talent.” Well, we’d like to say to you attitudy Judies (to quote comedian Pete Lee), it turns out the man can do 10 second imitations of a dozen comedians. That’s talent. Right? Maybe?
You decide. Check out the video below, wherein Fallon takes some time to become Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Norm Macdonald, Gilbert Gottfried, Pee-Wee Herman (not sure how he fits in here), Jeff Foxworthy, Eddie Murphy, Larry the Cable Guy, Steven Wright and Adam Sandler.
Enjoy! Or not. We don’t want to tell you how to live your life.
Ricky Gervais is already talking about the idea of making his new show into a movie – and the show hasn’t been shot yet! The UK’s Chortle reports that when asked about his future projects in a recent interview, comedian/actor/producer said: ‘Maybe we can do a film of Life’s Too Short.’
Life’s Too Short, which Gervais is co-writing with his Office collaborator, Stephen Merchant, is based on the experiences of dwarf actor Warwick Davis.
“Let’s see how the series goes. Let’s not get carried away,” advised Merchant, to which Gervais responded, “Let’s have it ready in case it’s a success. Always plan for success.”
The show is set to air on BBC Two, and will feature Gervais and Merchant playing themselves, a la Larry David in Curb.
Arguably the most powerful female comedian on the scene today, Chelsea Handler, has been chosen to host the ever-popular MTV Video Music Awards going down Sept. 12. It’s the first time a woman hosted the event alone, since Roseanne did it in 1994.
“This has been a huge year for hip-hop and rap, and it is well-known that I have the closest ties with these communities – musically and sexually,” Handler said in a statement, posted by People earlier today. “I am to rap and hippity-hop what Warren Buffet is to finance, minus the sex.”
So, does this compel you to watch the VMAs? Were you going to watch anyway? Or, are you all like, “Dude, eff the VMAs?”
Chances are if you’re on this site, you’ve seen Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske on the big or small screen making you piss your pants with laughter. But you know them by Broken Lizard, or maybe by “the dudes in Super Troopers and Beerfest (photo above).”
But you probably haven’t seen them perform stand-up. Well, it turns out the men recorded a night of live stand-up comedy at the El Rey theater in Los Angeles and are now set to release the results through Comedy Central; they’re calling it, fittingly: Broken Lizard: Stands Up.
It first airs on Comedy Central on Sept. 11 and will hit stores Sept. 14.
The disc promises more than 30 minutes of content not seen on the televised version of the show– 70 minutes in total. And hey, you can pre-order it right now. Just click the image below.
Looks like another buzzed-about comedian is about to make the jump to the small screen. Hollywood Reporter reported that Kate Micucci of the hilarious musical comedy duo, Garfunkel & Oates has been cast in Raising Hope, a new sitcom on Fox.
“Micucci originally landed the role of the main character’s cousin, Michelle,” said The Reporter. “…but after shooting the pilot, the character was cut. Convinced that she’d be good fit for the show, show creator Greg Garcia constructed a new character for her to play: Shelly, the owner of a baby and doggy day care center. Garcia even scripted in Micucci’s real-life ukulele-playing talent.”
The show stars Lucas Neff as a slacker raising an infant daughter. It premieres Tuesday, September 21. Click here for more info on Garfunkel & Oates, who earlier this summer had been included in Variety’s annual “10 Comics to Watch” list.
We think this is what finally landed her the sitcom gig.
Not satisfied with being one of the most popular comedians on two continents, Ricky Gervais is turning his sights on China. Turns out the man is working on a version of The Office for the Chinese people.
Gervais wrote on his blog: “I have some amazing news too. We are about to start work on developing a Chinese ‘The Office’. How cool is that? I’m worried they will pull out when they see the first episode of An Idiot Abroad [another show he's working on] though. Oh well.”
This will add the the already existing UK, US, French and Israeli versions of the show.
What’s that? You’ve been missing your favorite mock reality show about the daily trials of a ski-masked man who moves his family New York City in search of the limelight?
You’re in luck. Veteran writer/performer Jon Glaser returns to Adult Swim this month with the second season of his series, Delocated. Based on the first two episodes, Season two delivers more of the goofy-ass hilarity we saw in Season one, which was Glaser’s specialty in his days as a writer/performer on Late Night With Conan O’Brien.
It opens with a shakeup in the Russian crime syndicate out to kill Jon (it’s his character’s name too). Comedian Eugene Mirman reprises his role as Yvgeny Mirminsky, the hapless Russian hit-man/stand-up comedian that was once in charge of taking Jon out. Now he’s being demoted and replaced by his much scarier brother, Sergei.
Things get interesting when the use of decoy Jons are introduced to the mix to throw the killers off the scent; and things get more interesting when the decoys decide to unionize and fight for better job conditions. This is the kind of humor you can expect from Delocated: silly, deadpan fun.
On top of watching over his shoulder for crazed Russians, Jon has to deal with the loss of a friend, his ex wife dating an FBI agent, and his girlfriend Kim’s frustrations with their lifestyle, not to mention her wandering eye. The show’s premise is so nuts that anything that happens within it seems to somehow make perfect sense. Even Jon institutionalizing himself for depression is a laugh-packed plotline. There’s a piss-your-pants-funny Weekend At Bernie’s send-up scene that could work as a stand-alone sketch.
The show is like no other comedy on TV right now, and you should watch it. Oh, and comedian Todd Barry has a medium-sized role as himself. Season two premieres Sunday, Aug. 22 at 11 EST. You can also get more info about the show on the Adult Swim’s site, and behind-the-scenes stuff on the Delocatedblog.
Best known for her popular role on the show Reba and for her hosting gig on CMT’s The Singing Bee, actress Melissa Peterman has just been cast in another sitcom; but this time, it’s her own. Working Class, a family comedy about a blue-collar family that moves to the suburbs, will premiere in January on CMT.
“I had a great run on ‘Reba’ and loved every minute of it,” says Peterman. “I’ve really missed doing a sitcom. This one feels right. I can’t wait to get to work.”
In other Melissa Peterman news, she’s getting ready to put out her first standup comedy album. The album was recorded last week in her native state of Minnesota for Big Machine Records, Taylor Swift’s label. No word yet on when it will be released.
