Comedians Greg Fitzsimmons, Ben Gleib pay tribute to George Carlin on radio show

Digg!

George CarlinTwo years after his death, Southern California Public Radio’s Patt Morrison and comedians Greg Fitzsimmons and Ben Gleib joined together to pay tribute to the influential comedian. During the show, Morrison asked Fitzsimmons and Gleib about their experiences with Carlin. Then she opened the lines to callers who had been affected by Carlin and his comedy.

Callers reminisced about the effect Carlin’s comedy had on their lives. A few talked about how Carlin’s strong views against religion influenced their beliefs. Another said his college communications professor used Carlin’s bits on free speech and his “7 dirty words” to talk about expression and the media. A woman who was in the emergency room the night Carlin died described the loss the room felt when he was gone. The broadcast memorialized Carlin’s life and comedy as each caller described their personal connection to Carlin’s legacy.

Check out more quotes and the full broadcast here, where you can listen to more memories of George Carlin and his widespread impact. And to read our original tribute to Carlin the day after he died, go here.

Listen to Conan O’Brien’s 22-minute monologue from Radio City

Digg!

Conan O'BrienLast Tuesday, Conan O’Brien’s Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On Television Tour came to Radio City Music Hall in New York– just steps away from where the man used to host his original late night chat show. Much like his former show, near the start of the production that night, O’Brien addressed the crowd for more than 20 minutes– part stand-up/part monologue style.

He hit on all the topics you’d expect him to. But he also got deeply personal at times. The crowd ate up every second of it. The proof is in the trio of audio tracks below. You can hear the entire, historic show segment below. Enjoy!

“I had about one degree of separation with Robin Williams,” Maron tells Punchline Magazine. “We’d hung out a couple of times but we weren’t tight. I was taking a trip up to his neck of the woods. I thought I would try to track him down. So I did and he agreed to an interview.”

Maron continues: “No matter what your opinions may be of him he was, and might still be, one of the biggest comedy stars in the world. I was nervous because I didn’t want to get caught up in the Williams riff cyclone and be blown out without getting a real interview– a genuine conversation with him. We sat down for about an hour and he stayed still and focused and open. This is a rare chat with a huge star.”

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a song from Stephen Lynch

Digg!

Stephen LynchOn his stellar 2002 album Superhero, Stephen Lynch, he of the funny song writing ilk, ends his disc with a wee ditty called “Down to the Old Pub Instead.” Why are we telling you this? Well, because it’s friggin’ St. Patrick’s Day and said song, according to Lynch, was inspired by this holiest of holidays.

And what kind of site would we be if we didn’t somehow try to shoe-horn some kind of St. Patrick’s Day reference onto the blog on this day? The last thing we want are our Irish-American readers to feel slighted. So, don’t say we ignored this day. Now, enjoy the music of Stephen Lynch.

George Lopez will be “politically correct” Speedy Gonzales in new film

Digg!

George LopezFor years now, the 1950s cartoon icon Speedy Gonzales has been attacked for being a racist, politically incorrect stereotype of Mexicans. So it would seem odd that a major movie studio like New Line Cinema would produce an entire file based around the offensive character. Have no fear, sensitive souls! New Line’s got it all under control.

“We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy,” said Ann Lopez, George’s wife, who will serve alongside him as a producer. “Speedy’s going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.”

We know what you may be thinking. Isn’t Speedy the exact opposite of what the Mexican stereotype has been throughout the ages? The shitty stereotype is that Mexicans are slow and lazy and not overachieving and fast like our friend Speedy, right? Right.

And comedian Tim Slagle agrees. On his 2006 album Europa, he deftly tackles the issue. Check out the track below. And then tell us what you think. Was Speedy a racist character or not?
