George Lopez will be “politically correct” Speedy Gonzales in new film

Digg!

George LopezFor years now, the 1950s cartoon icon Speedy Gonzales has been attacked for being a racist, politically incorrect stereotype of Mexicans. So it would seem odd that a major movie studio like New Line Cinema would produce an entire file based around the offensive character. Have no fear, sensitive souls! New Line’s got it all under control.

“We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy,” said Ann Lopez, George’s wife, who will serve alongside him as a producer. “Speedy’s going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.”

We know what you may be thinking. Isn’t Speedy the exact opposite of what the Mexican stereotype has been throughout the ages? The shitty stereotype is that Mexicans are slow and lazy and not overachieving and fast like our friend Speedy, right? Right.

And comedian Tim Slagle agrees. On his 2006 album Europa, he deftly tackles the issue. Check out the track below. And then tell us what you think. Was Speedy a racist character or not?

I love the Tim Slagle track. He is right about everyone being overyly sensitive about cartoons. I’m sure the new Speedy Gonzales cartoon will be a huge hit because George Lopez is producing it!
