Say it isn’t so: Robert Schimmel arrested for domestic abuse
According to website TMZ and New York’s Daily News, comedian Robert Schimmel was arrested early this morning for alleged “felony domestic violence.”
From TMZ.com:
Cops got a call to come to Schimmel’s Calabasas home at around 12:30 AM. They observed physical marks on his wife. Law enforcement tells us there was an argument that allegedly turned violent.
At the time of this posting, Schimmel was being held on $50,000 bail.
Editor’s note: This is the type of news we hate reporting but feel we have to share the good and the bad for our readers who expect complete coverage of stand-up comedy. Having met Schimmel a few times and having interviewed him twice, I have a deep respect for him as a comedian and as someone who had fought and won the battle against cancer. I find it hard to believe he’s capable of something like this. So far these are just allegations. -dylan p. gadino

Oh gosh no. I hope not. I hope it was a fight rather than just Bob abusing his wife. Sometimes the girls hit the guys first…that’s different from what is being emplied here. Stevie.(female)

Please reserve judgement on this. He is not an abuser and is in no physical condition to start anything. He is bruised up and down and was the one who got arrested. More details will come out, I hope. This is a tragic situation regardless.

I’ve stood next to the man. He seemed a bit frail and not a spot over 5ft tall.
But I could see perhaps that in a moment of emotion none of us are evolved enough to resist, he might take a swing at his wife.
“I’ve carved out a living one club at a time survived cancer and celebrate my wife and children on the stage every night and you blew the valet?”
Could be something like that.

Wow. The abuse apologists on here are revolting.
Usually, domestic abuse is the man’s fault. Way more than it is the woman’s fault. Way more than it is a “fight” and just the man gets blamed. And, usually it is not an isolated incident.
Many of us are evolved enough to resist it. Most men don’t beat their wives.
Even if someone is caught cheating, that is not an excuse to turn violent.

As a woman, I can’t imagine what another woman would have to do to deserve to be hit or threatened by her husband!
However, we don’t know the circumstances of this case.
Could some of you men comment – would you get angry if your wife:
…was blatantly cheating on you? …more than once during your marriage?
…was spending money beyond reason to the point of bankruptcy?
…coerced you in marrying her based on a pregnancy and then you find out the baby isn’t yours?
…was taking drugs?
…was withholding sex?
…was being physically abusive to you?
…was verbally abusive to you?
…threatened to leave you and never let you see your children?
…promised to fake an injury to have you arrested?
I don’t condone violence in any way – I’m just wondering – for those of you assuming this 59 year old, 115 pound man is already guilty – if any or all of the above would make him angry enough to have an argument?
There was an argument. He was only arrested for suspicion of assault.

LOS ANGELES – Prosecutors in California say the wife of standup comic Robert Schimmel has declined press assault charges against him.
Deputy District Attorney James Garrison also wrote in a charge evaluation worksheet filed Thursday that there was not enough evidence to charge the 59-year-old.
Schimmel was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his wife on May 2 at his Calabasas home. She later filed for divorce.
The comedian has been a frequent guest on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and on Howard Stern’s radio show. His 2008 memoir, “Cancer on $5 a Day,” chronicles his battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
